After the great success of The Vertical of the Role, author, director and acting teacher Professor Dr. Jurij Alschitz has written a new handbook aiding day-to-day acting practice. Again the focus lies on the independence and autonomy of actors as the protagonists of contemporary theatre. Directors and teachers will find useful advice for their preparation time and inspiration on how to conduct the rehearsal process.
A method of questions? A question of the method.
All theatre systems and methods, including this one, are only meaningful when they are approached creatively and not as dogmas. It should, therefore, be stated from the outset that this is a book of questions and not ready answers. Here a question serves as the key to discovering the heart of the matter. The rare but vital characteristic of an actor or director that requires many of his fundamental ideas be rearranged lies in being able to ask questions of the role. Try your skills! Take a chance and you will discover the amazing world of the role, filled with various secrets and mysteries to which there is always an answer that sometimes comes straight away and sometimes never.

Today’s actors must be able to perform as soloists in the world of theater and film. The technique of the ‘Vertical of the Role’ enables actors to work up their roles on their own, and this not only makes them free and independent, it also makes them the authors of their art. It offers the basis for all manner of successful auditions, but also for artistic interaction within an ensemble and with a director.
Generations of actors have grown up with Stanislavsky’s classic, ‘The Actor’s Work on Himself’. But the theater of the 21st century with its own framework of production requires new forms of independent work from the actor.
Jurij Alschitz has developed the method of the ‘Vertical of the Role’ in the course of years of research into theater practice, which he carried out in the European Theater Centers that he has established in Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia. He has tested it and applied it successfully in stage practice in various countries.
Jurij Alschitz in his book offers his thoughts on the ethics of the acting profession. He views the actor as the author, creator, and center of the dramatic performance, who must consequently be equipped with the appropriate technical skills to fulfill these several tasks. The successive phases of the actor’s work on the ‘Vertical of the Role’ are explained in detail, ready to be used by the actor, or to form a basis for teachers and directors who wish to apply this method.
A separate chapter describes daily training for the actor on the basis of practical exercises
